Farmland Preservation
Protecting prime soils and farmland from development is critical to the long-term balance of our regional food system. Similar to open space conservation easements, agricultural easements are a tool that organizations like BVLT use to protect farmland and support local farmers, and we are proud to have partnered with Somewhere in Time Farm in Livingston Manor to protect this important farmland for the long-term. Owned by farmer Justin Southerland, the land is committed in perpetuity as agricultural, which is of particular importance for this site with its prime soils, which are relatively uncommon in the rocky and clay-rich lands of the Catskills.
